Powertrain Clunk Noise Investigation – Determination of Powertrain Backlash and Correlation to BTPA Results – free online seminar

When examining clunk noise, we are particularly interested in the answers to the following questions:

  • When does it arise?
  • Where does is arise?
  • and finally, which component is responsible for this noise phenomenon.

Rapidly increasing torques, together with existing backlashes in the drive train are mainly responsible for audible clunk noise. Therefore, a first step to gain a deep understanding of clunk noise phenomena is the investigation of backlash in the drive train. Basically, the backlash in the drive train can be separated into static and dynamic backlash, whereby this relates to whether the drive train of the vehicle is rotating or not. To precisely determine the backlash of individual components, it is also necessary to measure and analyze torque in the drive train, and to combine the results of torque and backlash measurements. An exact determination of the size of a backlash can only be achieved through many measurements and their statistical evaluation. The correlation of TPA results with the timing of backlash transit leads to the identification of the component that is responsible for the disturbing clunk noise.

In this online seminar, the complete procedure is shown and explained by use cases resulting from measurements and analyses at vehicle drivetrains.

Topics to be covered:

  • Static and Dynamic Backlash Measurements
  • Measurement Set-up in Vehicle for Backlash Investigations
  • Suitable Sensors for Backlash Measurements
  • Determination of backlash of individual components of the drive train
  •  Repeatability of Backlash Measurements
  • Statistic Analysis of Backlash Measurements
  • Correlation of Backlash Transit to TPA Results
  • Identification of Drive Train Components that are responsible for Clunk Noise
